Masonry Restoration

Description:
This historic, ornate brownstone building located on Hillhouse Avenue in New Haven contains Yale University's extensive collection of priceless musical instruments.  The firm of Martin A. Benassi, AIA - Architect was retained to investigate moisture penetration problems associated with the masonry and provide the owner with appropriate building repair procedures.

The building is constructed of brownstone from Portland, Connecticut.  Years of neglect called for complete cleaning of the facade to remove layers of dirt prior to any masonry restoration work.  Mortar matched original in color and type so as to maintain the historic character of the building.

Scope of work included:

  • Masonry repointing/repair
  • Cleaning
  • Sealant work
  • Painting

Cost of restoration:  $100,000
