Restoration

Description:

The original Sargent family residence, founders of Sargent Manufacturing in New Haven, this building had been converted into thirteen apartments for graduate students at Yale University.  An electrical fire destroyed the third floor, and the remainder of the building suffered considerable water damage.  The firm of Martin A. Benassi, AIA - Architect  was selected to work with Yale University Properties to restore the building before the next academic year.  The project was performed in two phases.  Phase one entailed structural stabilization and reconstruction of the entire third floor along with most of the roof.  The second phase involved extensive renovation to the other floors of the building, including complete remodeling of all kitchens and bathrooms.

Scope of work included:

  • Complete demolition and reconstruction of third floor
  • Demolition and reconstruction of more than two-thirds of the roof
  • Apartment renovations including bathrooms and kitchens
  • Structural repairs
  • Carpeting, vinyl, and hardwood refinishing of all floor surfaces
  • Restoration of damaged fire escape
  • Utility upgrades including heating and domestic hot water systems
