Restoration Description:
The original Sargent family residence, founders of
Sargent Manufacturing in New Haven, this building had been
converted into thirteen apartments for graduate students at
Yale University. An electrical fire destroyed the third floor, and the
remainder of the building suffered considerable water
damage. The firm of Martin A. Benassi, AIA -
Architect was selected to work with Yale
University Properties to restore the building before
the next academic year. The project was performed in
two phases. Phase one entailed structural
stabilization and reconstruction of the entire third floor along
with most of the
roof. The second phase involved extensive renovation to the other
floors of the building, including complete remodeling of
all kitchens and bathrooms.
Scope of work included:
- Complete demolition and
reconstruction of third floor
- Demolition and
reconstruction of more than two-thirds of the roof
- Apartment renovations
including bathrooms and kitchens
- Structural repairs
- Carpeting, vinyl, and
hardwood refinishing of all floor surfaces
- Restoration of damaged
fire escape
- Utility upgrades
including heating and domestic hot water systems
