Facilities Building
University of Connecticut - Avery Point Campus
Groton, Connecticut
Exterior Restoration

Description:

During the turn of the century, the Avery Point Campus of the University of Connecticut was a seaside estate,  with some of the buildings from the original estate still in use today.  The Police Headquarters Building and the Facilities Buildings are among these.  These buildings were constructed using steel and wood framing with stone masonry and slate shingles.  When the University of Connecticut needed to restore these buildings, they contracted with the firm of
Martin A. Benassi, AIA - Architect to provide a solution.  This project included the following:

  • Removal of existing roofing materials down to original wood deck;
  • Extensive restoration of cupolas;
  • Miscellaneous exterior sealant and painting;
  • Installation of new slate shingles including all related flashing and snow guards;
  • Copper sheet metal work including gutters, counterflashing, downspouts, and "dragon-back" ridges;
  • Exterior masonry restoration.
  • Approximate cost:  $755,000
