Storrs Hall
University of Connecticut Storrs, Connecticut
Restoration / Roofing
Description:
Storrs Hall, constructed in 1906. In an
attempt to preserve this historic building located on the
campus green at the University of Connecticut, the State
wanted to "make the envelope watertight" and prevent any
further water damage to the interior. Test results showed
that a soft slate, not meeting today's standards was used
in roofing the building. This resulted in numerous broken
or defective slate roofing tiles allowing water into the
building and causing dry rot in the roof deck. Martin A.
Benassi, AIA - Architect provided construction documents
for complete replacement of the slate roofing, repair of
any dry rot wood deck, re-roofing of flat areas with a
single-ply membrane and repair of all deteriorated copper
flashings. The firm also provided documents for other
repairs to deter further water entry including repointing
of masonry and caulking of doors and windows. |
