St. Mary's Church of
the Visitation
Clinton, Connecticut
Reroofing Description:
The structure of Saint
Mary's Church of the Visitation is comprised of several
individual buildings which have been joined together to
form one larger unit. The Church reported numerous
leaks relating to old roofs as well as recently reroofed
areas. During our site visits, numerous leaks
relating to old roofs as well as recently reroofed areas.
During our site visits, numerous deficiencies were
discovered. Low pitched roofs did not have a double
layer of underlayment, nor was the perimeter vertical base
flashing adhered properly to the masonry wall and
terminated correctly. The asphalt shingled roofs did
not have the proper offset between successive rows, and the
nail heads were too small with placement and quantity being
incorrect. Our task was to investigate roof leaks,
but we also were able to inform the Church of safety issues
as well. There was not any observed grounding rod for
the lightning protection, and the wood at the base of the
lightning rods along the high sanctuary ridge was burnt.
Exposed electrical wires were also brought to the attention
of the Church.
Working within the Church's
budget, Martin A. Benassi, AIA - Architect generated
drawings and specifications for the partial reroofing of
the building and the addressing of the safety issues.
Cost: $148,000
