Hawley Armory
University of Connecticut
Storrs, Connecticut
Restoration / Roofing / Structural

Description:
Hawley Armory, constructed 1915.
Over the course of years, water leakage though the building's exterior had resulted in damage inside and out. Water infiltration through various locations had caused extensive damage to the interior plaster and wood finishes. Pre-cast concrete copings, where not missing , were deteriorated to a point of exposing steel reinforcement bars. The State of Connecticut, in an effort to preserve this historic landmark, hired Martin A. Benassi, AIA - Architect to review the existing conditions, prepare design recommendations and complete construction documents as part of a package of five buildings on campus. Specific remedial work included: complete replacement of existing windows and doors in aluminum and wood: removal and replacement of roofing in asphalt shingle and shingle-ply membrane; complete exterior masonry restoration in brick, concrete and stone; structural reinforcement of interior trusses.
