Church of St. Joseph
Willimantic, Connecticut
Restoration

Description:
The Church of St. Joseph.
In 1938, a severe hurricane destroyed a majestic steeple at the Church of St. Joseph which rose 175 feet above street level and was never rebuilt. While the basic structure of the church remained, interior finishes became dull and defective over the years. Martin A. Benassi, AIA - Architect was retained as a consultant to assist in the design development, preparation of construction documents and construction observation for the complete restoration of the church. Renovation work included: stained glass repair and reconstruction; slate roof repair; handicapped accessibility including elevator installation; new altar, sanctuary and reredos design; re-design of all interior finishes; upgrading electrical, acoustical and heating systems; modification to the existing vestibule; site improvements. Total floor area: 20,000 square feet.
